Maomao returns to the palace, this time as a direct servant to Jinshin and in the outer palace. At first, she is a simple maid, but Jinshin and some unknown military officer are well aware of her intelligence and curiosity. Soon she gets involved in all kinds of little mysteries and potentially something more dangerous.I love the series for its setting, not hiding the ugliness that was part of any Imperial Court, but at the same time showing that people make do and create happiness (sometimes successful, sometimes not). The interactions between various characters are interesting and make me smile on occasion adding a welcome touch of humour to the mystery and drama. What we get to see on Maomao's past is certainly intriguing, adding depth to her personality, enough so that I can ignore her weird obsession with poisons and drugs. Some of the knowledge feels a bit out of place (too modern) for RL historical type of story, but only once or twice and it is not a historical novel, so I don't really mind.I have one complaint about the book, one about the mysteries. They are intriguing, making me curious about what exactly is going on (and went on in the past). It is just that it feels a bit too convoluted to me. Why make something this complicated? And how does it not fail considering the many steps taken? O well, a minor gripe for me since the mystery is not mine main attraction to the story.All in all, a really enjoyable read, and I am looking forward to the next novel(s) and what exactly is going on at court.
